2- methyl-l-naphthol

Amino-2-methyl-l-naphthol hydrochloride [130-24-5] M 209.6, m 283°(dec). Crystd from dilute HC1. 

A similar cyclization of the o-crotylbenzamide 3 provides 2-methyl-l-naphthol in 50% yield. 

Although the reaction is very selective, the re-oxidation step remains a crucial point that limits the overall productivity of the process. In this regard, it was found that it is possible to obtain a high selectivity to menadione even when starting from the partially oxidized catalyst, instead of the fully oxidized one. In other words, there is no need to re-oxidize the reduced POM (a = 0) completely, but a partial reoxidation (a = 0.25) is sufficient to obtain a POM that can be used for the successive synthetic step by contact with 2-methyl-l-naphthol [75]. The oxidation of 1-naphthol and 2-methyl-l-naphthol leads to 1,4-naphthoquinones together with some other products. 

A survey has appeared of the reactivity of 2,6-disubstituted phenols and 2-methyl-l-naphthol with A -methoxymethylmonoaza-12-crown-4 ether in the Mannich reaction. The acidity and the electrostatic charge of the aromatic compounds are indicators of their reactivity. Compound (20) was formed from the above naphthol in this reaction. In the presence of aluminium chloride, chlorothiophenes react with activated aromatic compounds to form arylthiophenes. The aluminium chloride-catalysed selfcondensation of chlorothiophenes produces mainly bi- and ter-thiophenes.
