The residue after distillation is diphenyl disulfide It may be recovered by recrystallization from ethanol. The methyl benzenesulfinate may be pale yellow when first distilled, but if so it becomes colorless on standing. If possible, a spinning-band column should be used for distillation, and distillation should be as rapid as possible use of a 47-cm. spinning-band column gave analytically pure ester, m25d 1.5436 (cf. Field and co-workers).6... 

Methyl benzenesulfinate has been prepared by the three-stage process of reduction of benzenesulfonyl chloride to benzenesulfinic add, conversion of the acid to benzenesulfinyl chloride, and esterification of the chloride with methanol. 7 It has been prepared also by ozonolysis of methyl benzenesulfenate.4 The present procedure is based on one reported by Field, Hoelzel, and Locke.6...
