Vilsmeier formylation of 4-methyloxazole gives a 1 1 mixture of 2- and 5-formyl derivatives (94H1791). A formal [2+3] cycloaddition of benzaldehyde to the 5-methoxy-oxazole 30 (R = p-MeOC H4), catalyzed by methylaluminium di(0-naphthoxide), affords the oxazoline 31 with 98% cis-selectivity, while the trans-isomer is produced in the presence of titanium(IV) chloride or tin(IV) chloride (93JOC7397). [Pg.184]
