Methods for making propionyl derivatives

Amines can be directly derivatized with the anhydride. The amine or amine hydrochloride (5 mg) is heated with freshly distilled propionic anhydride (0.5 ml) in a sealed reaction vial at 100 °C for 30 min. The product is poured onto water (5 ml) cautiously made alkaline with 2M NaOH and the amides are extracted into methylene chloride (3x1 ml). [Pg.39]

Amino add N-propionyl derivatives were prepared by Youngs, who first made the amino add isoamyl esters and then treated these with propionyl chloride using anhydrous sodium carbonate to remove the HCl formed. The esterified mixture of amino acids, totalling about 5 mg, was dissolved in carbon tetrachloride (5 ml), and sodium carbonate (100 mg) was added followed by propionyl chloride (0.2 ml). After refluxing for 30 minutes, the sodium salts were filtered off and the solution was concentrated and analysed by gas chromatography [42]. [Pg.39]
