Methionine challenge test

Other studies have involved measuring plasma homocysteine levels after a challenge dose of methionine. It was formd that vitamin Bg can reduce plasma homocysteine, where testing involved the methionine dose. It was foimd that vitamin Bg tends not to influence the amino acid with fasting hiunan subjects who did not receive any methionine dose (Boushey et al, 1995). The methionine challenge test involves an oral dose of 100 mg methionine/kg body weight, with blood samples taken at intervals over the course of 8 horns. Meastirements of plasma homocysteine, with the methionine dose, may be a more sensitive test for metabolic defects than measurements of plasma homocysteine in the fasting subject (Mudd, 1985 Clarke et al, 1991). [Pg.553]
