Methamphetamine "meth effects

METHAMPHETAMINE STUDIES METH Effects on the Dopaminergic System... [Pg.161]

This chapter discusses the responses of these extrapyramidal neuropeptide systems to the amphetamine analogs methamphetamine (METH), methylene dioxyamphetamine (MDA), and methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). These dmgs were selected for this study because they represent somewhat diverse mechanisms of action. While all three agents are able to enhance extrapyramidal serotonergic activity (Schmidt et al. 1987). only METH has been characterized as a substantial stimulant of the DA system. The effects of MDA and MDMA on extrapyramidal DA systems have not been well elucidated. Thus, evaluating and comparing the responses of the SP, NT, and Dyn extrapyramidal systems to these dmgs will help to determine the nature of the DA responses to METH, MDA, and MDMA administrations. [Pg.260]

One of the most devastating effects of methamphetamine addiction can be seen in pregnant women who are addicted. Exposure of a fetus to methamphetamine has been shown to cause limb malformations, abnormal reflexes, and behavioral problems in the newborn. Moreover, meth-addicted expectant mothers experience more premature deliveries and complications during delivery than do non-using expectant mothers. [Pg.29]

Methamphetamine is a stimulant drug chemically related to amphetamine but with stronger effects on the central nervous system. Street names for the drug include "speed," "meth," and "crank."... [Pg.25]

Methamphetamine also acts as a dopaminergic and adrenergic reuptake inhibitor and as a monamine oxidase inhibitor. It results in stimulation of the mesolimbic reward neuronal network, causing euphoria and excitement. The responses of the brain diminish the effects of cocaine or meth, which results in a "craving to take more and more of the drug to overcome the tolerance and recreate the high. Addiction is the result. [Pg.175]
