Table VI gives the data on heats of combustion for three photochromic compounds in both their stable and metastable forms. The striking feature of these data is that there is an insignificant increase in energy of the metastable form compared to the high energy radiation which produced it from the stable form. This should not be assumed to be characteristic of all photochromes since limited data are available for comparison. However, it does suggest that in certain systems the absorbed photon acts only to provide an energy of activation for a reaction.
