Metallo-Disilanes

The metallo-pentachlorodisilanes C5R5(OC)2M-Si2Cl5 (2a-d) are obtained by heterogenous metalation of Si2Cl6 with the corresponding alkali-metalates la-d. Compounds 2a-d are isolated in good yields as yellow solids, which proved to be stable on thermal treatment or exposure to air. Further metalation yields the bis(metallo)-disilanes 3a-d (Scheme 1). 

Hydrocarbon-bridged [2]ferrocenophanes 30 are quite well known and are significantly more strained than their disilane-bridged analogs because of the smaller size of carbon relative to silicon. Application of this oxygenation procedure to the ferrio-disilanes 4a,b reveals the following result treatment of 4a,b with 2 equivalents of dimethyldioxirane regiospecifically leads to insertion of oxygen into the a-Si-H bonds, yielding the metallo-(a-dihydroxy)disilanes 5a,b (Scheme 3).
