Mesophase spinning

The melt-spinning process used to convert mesophase pitch into fiber form is similar to that employed for many thermoplastic polymers. Normally, an extruder melts the pitch and pumps it into the spin pack. Typically, the molten pitch is filtered before being extruded through a multi-holed spinnerette. The pitch is subjected to high extensional and shear stresses as it approaches and flows through the spinnerette capillaries. The associated torques tend to orient the liquid crystalline pitch in a regular transverse pattern. Upon emerging from the... [Pg.128]

A very unusual characteristic of mesophase pitch is the extreme dependency of its viscosity on temperature [19,34,35]. This factor has a profound influence on the melt-spinning process (described above), as a mesophase pitch fiber will achieve its final diameter within several millimeters of the face of the spinnerette, in sharp contrast to most polymeric fibers. [Pg.129]

A helical arrangement within columns was also found for other metal 3-diketonate complexes provided with chiral side chains (32) by Serrano and co-workers.35,36 These compounds form rectangular columnar mesophases with helical order within the columns. A spin-coated sample of 32 showed a positive exciton-splitted signal in the CD spectra, which was interpreted as a left-handed (M) helix. Annealing of the film resulted in much higher optical activities and a shift of the absorption maxima. The observed optical changes clearly point to a chiral organization of the columns in the mesophase. [Pg.386]

For spin-f nuclei, dipolar interactions may be modulated by intramolecular (DF, reorientation etc.) and/or intermolecular (TD) processes. In general, the intra- and inter-molecular processes can produce quite different Tj frequency dispersion curves. In practice, NMR field cycling experiments are often needed to extend the frequency domain from those employed in conventional spectrometers to a lower frequency range (i.e., the kHz regime) for unambiguous separation (and identification) of different relaxation mechanisms. The proton spin relaxation by anisotropic TD in various mesophases has been considered by Zumer and Vilfan.131 133,159 In the nematic phase, Zumer and Vilfan found the following expression for T ... [Pg.106]
