Mesogen studies

Mesogen Studies. The conformational characteristics of the anticipated mesogenic group (diphenoxyxylene unit) was investigated via the synthesis and conformational studies of a model compound, a, a -diphenoxy-p-xylene. [Pg.63]

Complementary information about the structure of the smectic phases is contained in the X-ray scattering patterns, as in studies of real mesogens. The intermolecular scattering patterns calculated (see Sect. 3) for GB(4,4, 20,0, 1,1)... [Pg.91]

Many technological applications of liquid crystals, as in electro-optic display devices, are based on multicomponent mixtures. Such systems offer a route to the desired material properties which cannot be achieved simultaneously for single component systems. Mixtures also tend to exhibit a richer phase behaviour than pure systems with features such as re-entrant nematic phases [3] and nematic-nematic transitions possible. In this section, we describe simulations which have been used to study mixtures of thermotropic calamitic mesogens. [Pg.121]

The alignment of the director at the nematic free surface of real systems is not found to exhibit universal behaviour. Depending on the mesogen, homeotro-pic, tilted and planar anchoring have been observed. Clearly, to study this interface in a simulation a potential which exhibits a nematic phase in co-... [Pg.128]
