Mentors attributes

Mentoring for retention has been a huge success in Lex. Whilst turnover in the general management population has remained steady, in the mentee group it has halved. This may not all be attributable to mentoring, but the indications are there that mentoring has made the difference. 

In many circumstances, factors other than business knowledge will be more important in determining the quality of a mentoring relationship. These include that mentors must possess a particular set of skills, abilities and attributes. Furthermore, they must be familiar with mentoring techniques and processes and possess the right attitude towards mentoring. We will take a look at all of these components in the following sections. 

Patience is one of the attributes most frequently associated with mentoring. For example, seeing mentees achieve results often takes much longer than mentors had originally envisaged. This requires mentors to stay calm and to understand that mentees have other day-to-day priorities, so they are often not...

As you will perhaps already know from training evaluation, this level is by far the most difficult to establish. This is usually attributed to training having indirect, subtle and long-term effects rather than directly measurable short-term ones. The same applies to mentoring - i.e. outcomes are often abstract and not quantifiable, at least not over the short-term. 

You One example comes to mind. My friend s father was running for mayor of our town. It was a close race, because the incumbent was well known. I volunteered to be part of the team that went door to door to invite people to a "Meet the Candidate" event. This was really about being a salesperson, and I had never done anything like it before. But my friend s father had really been a kind of mentor to me, and he always gave thoughtful advice—so I could persuade people by discussing his positive attributes honestly and sincerely. When I went to the event, I was pleased to see how many families came that I had personally talked to. 

Student response to the first year of AIURP awards has been overwhelmingly positive. About one of the participants, her mentor wrote her attitude toward research is one of her greatest attributes. She comes in early in the morning and is prepared to work. She takes her notebook (a very neat notebook) home with her at night so she can plan the reactions for the following day.
