Memory dynamic range

All broadband spectra were amplified by a low-noise preamplifier with a dynamic range > 1,000, and a broadband main amplifier. The amplified time-domain signal is digitized by a 20 MHz, 9 bit Bruker ADC with 128 K words of buffer memory, and Fourier transformed by a Bruker array processor (128 K word FFT in 8 sec). 

For reversible interactions, the linear dynamic range is determined by that portion of the coating-analyte sorption isotherm (discussed in Section 5.4) that lies between the LOD and the saturation limit. For irreversible interactions, the LDR will depend on the sorption/reaction kinetics and the coating capacity. For practical reasons, it is desirable to have the widest LDR possible, although inexpensive microprocessors and associated memory make correction for minor nonlinearities straightforward. For an example of a wide linear dynamic range, refer to Figure 5.13. 

When one considers both intensity and frequency information, the information content in a spectrum is very large the number of resolution elements ( 103) times the instrument dynamic range (typically 8 bits = 256) divided by the noise ( 2 bits). Spectra with an information content well in excess of the above estimated 105 often require only a few minutes of data acquisition directly into a computer memory.
