Media nism

The product is optically active and we can measure its rotation. But this tells us nothing. Unless we know the true rotation for pine sec-butyl acetate, we don t yet know whether it is optically pure nor even whether it really is inverted. But we can easily find out. All we have to do is to hydrolyse the ester and get the original alcohol back again. We know the true rotation of the alcohol—it was our starting material— and we know the media nism of ester hydrolysis (Chapter 12)—nucleophilic attack occurs at the carbonyl carbon and retention must be the stereochemical outcome as no reaction occurs at the stereogenic centre.

Kinetic studies designed to identify reaction medianisms are often aimed at the media-nism in the initial stages of a forward reaction, before any oxnplications due to reverse reactions or inhibition by products can appear.
