The conversion rate (recovery rate) of the mechano-chemical process reaches close to 100 %, but that of the dynamic hydriding/dehydriding process reaches a maximum of 70 %. The conversion rate can be improved considerably by reducing the size of the Mg particles.

The simplest artificial mechano-chemical system is that able to realise the energy conversion by swelling of a polymer network, using only one liquid component. Thus, a poly(vinyl alcohol)-based gel, crosslinked with glutaric aldehyde and immersed in pure water, realises the mechano-chemical cycle as Figure 4.9 shows.
