Mechanical effects can be produced by mechanical cleaning methods. Wire brushing a surface to remove contaminants may work-harden the part s surface. Tumbling operations may result in a shot-peen effect dependent upon the material, or it may remove plated surfaces. 

Mold maintenance depends very strongly on the specific conditions of the mold. It is therefore possible that the same rules apply as for standard molds. It is also often necessary to consider the specifics, especially mechanical cleaning methods, which can cause damage in the micro-structured molded parts. 

MIC can be a serious problem in stagnant water systems such as those used for fire protection. The use of biocides and mechanical cleaning methods can reduce MIC, hut anywhere where stagnant water is likely to collect is a location where MIC can occur. Corrosion (oxidation of metal) can only occur if some other chemical is present to be reduced. 

Surface preparation The surfaces to be brazed or soldered should be clean and free from grease, oxides, paint, scale, and dirt of any kind. A suitable chemical or mechanical cleaning method should be used if necessary to provide a clean wettable surface. 

Gleaning. Fouling films are removed from the membrane surface by chemical and mechanical methods. Chemicals and procedures vary with the process, membrane type, system configuration, and materials of constmction. The equipment manufacturer recommends cleaning methods for specific apphcations. A system is considered clean when it has returned to >75% of its original water flux. 

Mechanical cleaning includes scrubbing, scraping, brushing, mechanical shocking, and ultrasonic procedures. Scrubbing with a bristle brush and a mild abrasive is the most widely used of these methods the others are used principally as supplements to remove heavily encrusted corrosion products before scrubbing. Care should be used to avoid the removal of sound metal. 

As with other removable-bundle exchangers, the inside of the shell, and to the outside of the tubes. However, unlike the straight-tube exchanger, whose tube internals can be mechanically cleaned, there is no way to physically access the U-bend region inside each tube, so chemical methods are required for tubeside maintenance.

Selection of visible light reflectance as a candidate nondestructive test method was based on results from probing experiments. It was observed that as cotton was mechanically cleaned, its visible light reflectance increased. Conversely, addition of trace amounts of particulate (trash and dust) to extensively cleaned cotton resulted in a decrease in visible light reflectance. Finally, it was noted that off-colored cotton was rendered whiter with repetitive mechanical cleaning.
