Unpublished data of General Chemicals Division, Allied Chemical Company. Used by permission, c = critical temperature. No material in SI units appears in the 1993 ASHRAE Handbook—Fundamentals (SI ed.). Tables and a chart to 50 ata, 200 C are given by Mathias, H. and H. J. Loffler, Techn. Univ. Berhn rept., 1966 (42 pp.). A chart to 1500 psia, 500 F was given by Mears, W. H., E. Rosenthal, et al.,y, Chem. Eng. Data, 11, 3 (1966) 338-. l43. [Pg.330]

Sohd Catalysts Processes with solid catalysts are affected by diffusion of heat and mass (1) within the pores of the pellet, (2) between the fluid and the particle, and (3) axially and radially within the packed bed. Criteria in terms of various dimensionless groups have been developed to tell when these effects are appreciable. They are discussed by Mears (Ind. Eng. Chem. Proc. Des. Devel., 10, 541-547 [1971] Jnd. Eng. Chem. Fund., 15, 20-23 [1976]) and Satterfield (Heterogeneous Cataly.sls in Practice, McGraw-Hill, 1991, p. 491). [Pg.708]

Plug flow is approached at low values of the dispersion coefficient or hi values or Peclet number. A criterion developed by Mears (Chem. Eng. Sci., 26, 1361 [1971]) is that conversion will be within 5 percent of that predicted by phig flow when... [Pg.2121]

Many authors contributed to the field of diffusion and chemical reaction. Crank (1975) dealt with the mathematics of diffusion, as did Frank-Kamenetskii (1961), and Aris (1975). The book of Sherwood and Satterfield (1963) and later Satterfield (1970) discussed the theme in detail. Most of the published papers deal with a single reaction case, but this has limited practical significance. In the 1960s, when the subject was in vogue, hundreds of papers were presented on this subject. A fraction of the presented papers dealt with the selectivity problem as influenced by diffitsion. This field was reviewed by Carberry (1976). Mears (1971) developed criteria for important practical cases. Most books on reaction engineering give a good summary of the literature and the important aspects of the interaction of diffusion and reaction. [Pg.24]

The addition of a minimum of 2% molybdenum content in type 316 stainless steel has been shown to reduce the tendency for pitting-type corrosion in chloride environments. Hoar and Mears postulated that chloride ions accelerate the corrosion of stainless steel by penetrating the oxide him. The chloride-contaminated him then loses its passivating quality and a local attack on the metal follows, creating a pit. The exact mechanism by which molybdenum strengthens the oxide him is not clearly understood. ... [Pg.476]

The Mackie-Mears expression has been extensively used in the analysis of diffusion in polymers where it is assumed that the obstacles, i.e., the polymer fibers, are of the same order of magnitude as the radius of the solute. [Pg.577]
