Appendix A lists selected worksheet functions in the Database, Date Time, Information, Logical, Lookup Reference, Math Trig, Statistical, Lookup Reference, and Text categories. Appendix B provides an alphabetical list of these worksheet functions along with the required syntax, some comments on the required and optional arguments, one or more examples and a list of related functions. 

Excel 2000 provides more than 300 worksheet functions, in 11 categories Engineering, Financial, Date Time, Information, Math Trig, Statistical, Lookup Reference, Database, Text, Logical, External. This book uses functions from seven of those categories. This appendix lists selected worksheet functions by category. In Appendix B, the functions are listed alphabetically, with comments, examples and related functions. 

Excel comes equipped with many engineering functions. Choose Insert/Functions. Then choose Math Trig or Engineering to see the functions. A window appears that explains how to use the functions. 

Two of the functions under Math Trig are MINVERSE and MMULT. These functions have the obvious use. The inverse function, of course, must act on a square matrix, and creates a square matrix. To use it, first create the matrix, as illustrated in cells A1 C3 of Figure A.ll. 

For mathematical functions use the button labeled fx in the standard toolbar in Excel 95 it is called the Function Wizard in Excel 97 the Paste Function. Both will give you two side-by-side columns, one for Function Category, the other for Function Name. Pick a category, then in that category the name of the function you want to use. (Since there are so many functions listed under, say, Math Trig, you most likely will need to use the vertical scroll bar to find your function.)... 

Once you have selected your function, you will not only find it described, but you will also get help in placing the arguments. For example, when you look under Math Trig => SUMX2MY2, a function we will often use when computing least-squares fits, you will get two windows in which you can place the addresses of the two columns or rows you want to use for X andY. 

Excel has numerous mathematical and statistical functions or syntaxes that can be used to simplify setting up calculations. Peruse the Function names for the Math Trig and the Statistical function categories underin the toolbar. Some you will find useful for this text are ...
