Masters, Helen

The Chemistry Department of the newly formed King s College of Household and Social Science initially fell under the overall direction of Herbert Jackson30 of King s College, The Strand.18 Following Seward s departure in 1914, the staff based at Kensington Square were Henry Llewellyn Smith and an Assistant Lecturer, Helen Masters. 

Masters and Tinkler worked together, as Agnes Browne (Mrs. Jackman) noted in Tinkler s obituary In collaboration with Miss Helen Masters he [Tinkler] created a course in Applied Chemistry unique in its scope and to the present day regarded as a model in Home Science departments throughout the world. 34 The content of the course was published in 1926 as a two-volume set, Applied Chemistry.35 This text became the standard reference work on analytical procedures for chemistry related to the home and it was still being reprinted in 1948, while the first American edition was published in 1950. 

The Domestic Science Training College was staffed very largely by women. It was to Battersea Polytechnic that Marion Soar, Helen Masters, and Phyllis Garbutt had moved from King s College for Women. In addition, the two chemistry positions — Chemistry Physics, and Chemistry as Applied to Household Processes — were traditionally held by women. For example, in the 1919-1920 Battersea Polytechnic Calendar, the staff for both subjects were Claudia McPherson and Marjorie Sudds.

At first willfdhrig or compliant as her name suggests, Helene becomes a heroine in liberal feminist mode as Baum exposes the poverty and misog-ynistic discrimination which the female apprentice must face to become Meisterin (master) within the hitherto male domains of the university, science and business. Besides educational and economic emancipation, modernity Weimar style created a new norm of rationalised and perfectly planned sexuality which was anything but simple to execute . Major obstacles to sexual fulfilment were inadequate birth control and a punitive abortion law. Baum exposes the horrors of back-street abortions, but goes on to offer her...
