Unified Atomic Mass Unit (u) A non-SI unit of mass defined as one twelfth of the mass of one atom of 12C in its ground state and 1.66 x 10-27 kg. The term atomic mass unit (amu) is not recommended to use since it is ambiguous. It has been used to denote atomic masses measured relative to a single atom of 160, or to the isotope-averaged mass of an oxygen atom, or to a single atom of 12C. [Pg.10]

To calculate the photon masses, define the Higgs field by a small expansion around the vacuum expectations... [Pg.214]

However, it must be pointed out that Aiv expressed in Cartesian coordinates, is not normalised. Gaussian94 first normalises Ar, before printing and also prints the former norm or, more precisely, its inverse. This last quantity has mass units and is referred to as the normal mode reduced mass, which is not to be confused with the reduced mass defined in classical mechanics. The normal mode reduced mass appears because of the fact that, after transforming to the new normalised coordinates, one is no longer representing the energy versus Qi but versus Qi divided by the square root of this reduced mass. As a result, the resulting force constant is multiplied by this mass and the... [Pg.218]

If a reaction is occurring in an adiabatically isolated mass, defined as calorimeter, the temperature of the mass will change according to the expression (1)... [Pg.191]

Equation (7) also holds for a polydisperse sample of PVOH, but the molar mass in this case is, the viscosity-average molar mass defined below. [Pg.323]

It has been tried to put the result of Kennedy et al (//) in a la-Mw graph (Fig. 7). Two samples families are distinguished quenched samples and slowly crystallized samples. In both families, the ductile-brittle transition occurs at lac = 6 nm. The corresponding critical molar mass defined in scheme A is higher for slowly crystallized samples (M c 100 kg.mof ) than for quenched ones (M c 60 kg.mof ). This result can be considered as a proof that scheme B is more pertinent than scheme A. [Pg.169]

On the fencity with density Properties of Matter Differentiate between volume and mass. Define density. [Pg.184]

Controlling the type and number of monomer insertion mistakes leads to controlling the crystallinity and the melting point of PP, which, together with its molecular mass, define its physical and mechanical properties. [Pg.1051]

We have seen that 1 mole of carbon-12 atoms has a mass of exactly 12 grams and contains 6.022 X 10 atoms. This mass of carbon-12 is its molar mass, defined as the mass (in grams or kilograms) of 1 mole of units (such as atoms or molecules) of a substance. Note that the molar mass of carbon-12 (in grams) is numerically equal to its atomic mass in amu. Likewise, the atomic mass of sodium (Na) is 22.99 amu and its molar mass is 22.99 grams the atomic mass of phosphorus is 30.97 amu and its molar mass is 30.97 grams and so on. If we know the atomic mass of an element, we also know its molar mass. [Pg.72]

Eq. (55) implies that if internal coordinate qn represents the change in the bond distance of a diatomic molecular fragment AB caused by AB bond stretching, then 1/Gnn will be exactly equal to the reduced mass defined by mAmB/(mA+mB). Furthermore, Eq. (55) reveals that in the general case 1/Gnn can be taken as the reduced mass associated with internal coordinate qn, no matter which functional form qn takes. [Pg.273]
