Marine core barrel

Marine Core Barrels. Marine barrels were developed for offshore coring where a stronger core barrel is required. They are similar to the conventional core barrels except that they have heavier outer tube walls. 

Apart from the dimensions of the corer and cutter, it is essential to have well-designed nonreturn valves and sample retainers to minimize the resistance to penetration and prevent the loss of any sediment on recovery. In addition to the disturbance created inside the core barrel, the soil ahead of the advancing corer is subjected to stresses that influence the final core (Kallstenius, 1958). In marine sediments, there is very little scope for compaction of sediments inside the core tube because only a negligible amount of water can be forced out of the material during the short period of time required for penetration (Piggot, 1941 ... 

Most university and government laboratory investigators obtain marine sediment samples in plastic liners within a metal core barrel. The plastic used is typically cellulose...

Banwell has developed a new approach to the core associated with several members of the lamellarin class of marine natural products. This approach utilized some interesting pyrrole arylation reactions including a Negishi. cross coupling of the iodopyrrole 46 followed by a double-barrelled Heck cyclization of the resultant arylpyrrole 47 yielding the core structure 48...
