He entered Marburg University with advanced standing so that he started as a second year student. He was drafted in the German army in 1918 but returned to the University after World War I and received the Ph.D. degree in chemistry in 1920. His major professor was Karl von Auwers who insisted tiiat Ziegler conduct research different from that of his major professor after graduation. 

Karl completed the requirements for his habilitation and was made a privatdocent at Marburg University. He joined the faculty at the University of Frankfurt in 1925 and left the following year to accept a position at the University of Heidelberg where he remained until 1936 He accepted a position as head of the Chemical Institut at the University of Halle where he remained until 1943. 

Erich Hiickel (1896-1980) was born in Stutigart, Germany, and received his Ph D. at the University of Gottingen with Peter Debye. He was professor of physics, first at Stuttgart and later at Marburg (1937-19611.

Professor Meyer was born at Dorpat, Estonia, on September 29, 1883, the elder son of Hans Horst Meyer—who held the chair of experimental pharmacology at the University of Vienna and formulated the modern theory of narcosis known as the Overton-Meyer theory. Two years later, his father became professor at Marburg/Lahn, and it was in this city that Kurt H. Meyer had his early education. The scholarly atmosphere in which he matured, where chemistry and medicine were always very much in the foreground, was to influence him throughout his lifetime. From his father, he inherited his desire for scientific study and research, and from his mother, his taste for the fine arts. His younger brother became a famous heart-surgeon. 

Wilfried Hess was born in Wiesbaden in 1979. He studied chemistry at the Philipps-University in Marburg and is currently a Ph.D. student working in the group of Prof. Hilt in the field of cobalt-catalyzed cyclization reactions.
