Mannans optical rotation

The structure of the mannan, or mannans, in wood cannot be described with certainty. Hess and Liidtke isolated a mannan from pine sulfite pulp identical with ivory-nut mannan-A in optical rotation and x-ray diagram. Husemann prepared, from spruce hemicellulose, fractions having rotational values in agreement with those for the mannan from pine sulfite... 

Scheme 8.9). The C NMR and optical rotation of trisaccharide 26 were identical to those reported by Lichtenthaler (vide supra) [36]. Crich and co-workers have also successfully applied their methodology towards the synthesis of complex P-mannan structures [48] and the mannosyl erythritol lipid MEL A [49]. 

Polyglucans have no chromophore and their ORD curves are thus plain at wavelengths down to 200 nm. The optical rotation can be expressed by a single-term Drude equation with Xo values of about 140-160 nm [5—8]. Bittiger and Keilich [9] transformed cellulose, amylose, mannan and pullulan with phenylisocyanate and obtained the carbanilates (Equation (3)).
