Managerial Skills and Leadership

The identification of the component skills that make up a successful leader has been the subject of extensive research in many schools of social science and psychology etc. What is clear from all this research is that natural leadership skills, or the born leader qualities, do exist but that they can only be developed not implanted in a person. It is possible, however, to identify other qualities that can indeed be taught to individuals. 

In terms of Managerial Leadership Skills these qualities have been identified as shown below [A-13, A-14]. Those qualities which are marked with an asterisk, are the skills which can be taught to an individual and improved by practice and coaching. 

Using this system it is possible to rate personal skills in each of these categories. It 

General management competencies can be split into six areas. 

Managing Oneself. Directing your own efforts in an effective manner.
