Malonic anilides

The Selenide [(NHCgHg.CO CSe. —This occurs when malon-anilide (5 mols.) and selenium tetrachloride (4 mols.) react in absolute ether at 27° to 30° C. The product darkens at 217° C. and melts at 222° to 223° C. Malon-m-chloroanilide also occurs during the preparation. Reduction of the selenide by alkali hydrosulphite affords the original anilide and hydrogen selenide, whilst treatment with bromine gives dibromomalonanilide and selenium bromide. 

This reaction has been made with various carbonyl compounds, e.g., cyclopentanone,27 cyclohexanone,20 cycloheptanone,27 cycloocta-none,27 1-tetralone,21 2-tetralone,28 variously substituted acetophenones,29 phenyl benzyl ketone,29 dibenzyl ketone,29 dibenzoyl-methane,18, 30 ethyl benzoylacetate,18 ethyl malonate,30 malon-anilide,30 and 2-(bisalkylthio)methylenecyclopentanones and cyclohexanones.27... 

Hydrazine hydrate added to a soln. of 2-spirocyclohexane-3-phenyl-4,6-dioxo-tetrahydro-l,3-oxazine in a little dil. ethanol, and briefly refluxed malonic anilide hydrazide. Y 94%. F. e. s. E. Ziegler and G. Brus, M. 98, 1100 (1967).
