Male-linked antigens

Statistical analysis suggests that in approximately i in 7 homosexual men, their homosexuality is related to the fraternal birth order effect. There is no such effect in female homosexuals. Homosexual males with older brothers also have significantly lower birth weights compared to heterosexual males with older brothers. One possible reason for this phenomenon is that as mothers become progressively immunized to male-linked antigens produced by successive male fetuses, the mothers produce antibodies against these antigens. The antibodies then divert the development of the fetal brain from heterosexual male to homosexual male. But this maternal immunity theory remains a speculation. [Pg.166]

A similar effect has been reported if peptides, even if self-antigens such as the hormone LHRH, are linked covalently to other well established lmmunoadjuvants, e.g. to the muramyl-dipeptide. In fact, with a N-acetylmuramyl-dipeptide/LHRH construct immunological castration of male mice was achieved (170-173). The identical effect has recently been obtained with a N-acetylmuramyl-dipeptide/LHRH construct linked to a solubilized polymer support (131). We have attempted this approach with the self-antigen gastrin. In order to exploit the... [Pg.926]

The quantitative measurements are based on the decrease in the photocurrent intensity of the phthalocyanine-sensitized graphene-CdS nanocomposite, which is caused by an increase in the steric hindrance due to the formation of the immunocomplex antibody-antigen on the surface (Fig. 13b). The feasibility of the proposed immunosensor for clinical application was evaluated in the diagnosis of prostate cancer by analyzing real samples from three healthy males and three patients. The results showed that the developed method and the enzyme-linked... [Pg.121]
