An alternative method of running an nmr spectrometer is to hold the magnetic field constant and to sweep the transmitter frequency through the resonances. This mode of operation is more like other forms of spectroscopy and gives the same line shapes as sweeping the field (Figure 9-25). 

To obtain a mass spectrum, particles of different — can be collected successively either by accelerating voltage or by varying the magnetic field continuously at a constant rate usually the voltage is varried keeping the magnetic field constant. 

From the aforementioned equation, one can see that there are two modes of operation for the magnetic sector mass spectrometer. One method holds the magnetic field constant and scans the mass by varying the potential applied to the ion optics the other method varies the magnetic field to control the selected mass while keeping the kinetic energy of the ions constant.
