Magnesium carbonate normal hydrate

Properties. The physical properties of the normal magnesium carbonates are given in Table 3, those of the basic magnesium carbonates in Table 4. Magnesium carbonate is insoluble in C02-free water. The solubiUty products, iC, for magnesium carbonate and some hydrates foUow (38). 

Normal, hydrated, and the basic magnesium carbonates react with acids to yield salts which can be recovered by crystallization (43). Magnesium carbonate forms many double salts, some of which are Hsted ia Table 5. 

Normal carbonates of the lanthanides can be precipitated from Ln solutions by NaHCOg, in this the lanthanides resemble magnesium. Many of the carbonates form hydrates. The carbonates are soluble in alkali metal carbonate solutions, and compounds such as KgCOg.Ccg (003)331120 have been crystallised. 

Depending upon the manufacturing process used, the composition of the magnesium carbonate obtained may vary from normal hydrated magnesium carbonate to basic hydrated magnesium carbonate.

Light Magnesia. A form of magnesium oxide normally made by extraction from sea-water (see sea-water magnesia) the precipitated hydrate is subsequently purified by conversion to the carbonate which is then calcined at approx. 800°C. The bulk density is 0.1. On exposure to the air it takes up water and COj to form a basic carbonate. Light magnesia finds use as a heat insulator and as a source of magnesia in various chemical processes.
