The action of phenyl magnesium bromide on ethyl 2-fluoroethoxypropionate gave, not the expected diphenyl-2-2 -fluoroethoxyethylcarbinol, but rather surprisingly the corresponding bromo compound (p. 160).2... 

Abstract Magnesium porphyrazines substituted with eight (phenyl-propene) groups on the peripheral positions have been prepared by cyclotetramerization of l,2-bis(3-phenyl-2-propenethio) maleonitrile and then achieved porphyrazine by 3-bromo-l-phenyl-l-propene. Metal-free derivative was obtained by its treatment with trifluoroacetic acid. The new compounds have been characterized by FT-IR, H-NMR, UV-VIS and elemental analysis methods. 

Another work of Duhamel and Ancel [59] related this synthesis of retinal via (3-ionylideneacetaldehyde. Condensation of methallyl-magnesium chloride with diethyl phenyl orthoformate (EtC CHOPh) led after bromination of the ene-acetal, deshydrohalogenation (NaOH 50%), ethanol elimination with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) and ISiMes, to the bromo-dienol ether. This latter was submitted to bromine lithium exchange and the lithio enol ether was then condensed with p ionylideneacetaldehyde to give retinal, Fig. (28). 

In the original patent published by Merck in 1995, rofecoxib (2) was synthesized in three steps from the known 4-(methylthio)acetophenone (10), prepared from the Friedel-Crafts acylation of thioanisole. As depicted in Scheme 2, oxidation of sulfide 10 using an excess of magnesium monoperoxyphthalate hexahydrate (MMPP, an inexpensive, safe and commercially available surrogate for w-CPBA) gave rise to sulfone 11, which was subsequently brominated with bromine and AICI3 to afford 2-bromo-l-(4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl)ethanone (12). The bromo-magnesium salt of an intermediate of this type has been obtained recently by means of phenylmagnesium bromide from DL-threo-3,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-2-oxa-zolidone G. Fodor, Chimia (Swilz.) 9, 179 (1954) K. Koezka and G. Fodor, Acta Chim. Acad. Sci. Hung. 13, 83 (1957).
