Magnesium adult human

Magnesium. In the adult human, 50—70% of the magnesium is in the bones associated with calcium and phosphoms. The rest is widely distributed in the soft tissues and body duids. Most of the nonbone Mg ", like K", is located in the intracellular duid where it is the most abundant divalent cation. Magnesium ion is efftcientiy retained by the kidney when the plasma concentration of Mg fads in this respect it resembles Na". The functions of Na", K", Mg ", and Ca " are interrelated so that a deficiencv of Mg " affects the metaboHsm of the other three ions (26). Foods rich in magnesium are listed in Table 9. 

An adult human contains about 1 mol (24 g) of magnesium. The distribution and concentrations of magnesium in the tissues of a healthy adult are shown in Table 2.2-2. 

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant and essential element for human body. The body of adult human being contains about twenty gram of magnesimn. 70-75% of ms esium is present in bones along with calcium and phosphorus, 25-30% of magnesium is present in soft tissues and body fluids. An adult man needs 250-300 mg of Mg per day out of which only one third is absorbed by the intestine. 

Implications for Human Nutrition. The RDA for magnesium In adults Is 350 mg for malps and 300 mg for females ( ) Thus, diets containing the RDAs for both minerals would contain Mg/Zn ratios of 23.3 and 20.0, respectively. Dietary and truly supraphyslologlcal... 

The content of magnesium in the body of an adult is about 25-40 g. This accounts for about 60% of the content of the skeleton. The highest concentrations of magnesium in soft tissues are found in the pancreas, liver and skeletal muscles. Blood and extracellular fluids contain only 1% of the total amount of magnesium in the body. Calcium is quantitatively the major mineral component in the human body. The total amount is about 1500g, with 99% of this being in bones and teeth as calcium phosphate.
