Magee, Hezekiah

Along about the end of the war the rebels came first, and they took all of the horses and mules they could find, which was not many. Hezekiah Magee sent Isom back into the woods with a drove of stock and cattle, and he stayed there until he got word to come back. 

Isom Wilson was a faithful servant to Hezekiah Magee, and Hezekiah thought the world of all of Isom. When they got the news that Freedom had been declared, Hezekiah called Isom to him. Isom told the story later. 

Isom stayed there on the place, and he worked on the share. When Hezekiah died he was still living with him. Isom raised Ferdie and Andrew Magee they were just lads of boys when Hezekiah died. They... 

After Isom had raised Hezekiah s children, Andrew Magee told Isom about a quarter section that could be homesteaded, laying right next to Hezekiah s old home place. Andrew put Isom on this land, and he showed him how to prove it, and how to take possession. When he had proved it up, Andrew got one hundred acres, and a fraction, and Isom got sixty acres and a fraction. That is where Isom Wilson raised all of his children, and where he lived until he died, an old man. 

Suppose we think of the white men who owned slaves in those times, and the colored people they owned, people of the same age of Isom Wilson, or maybe a little older. There were two brothers who lived on the river near where Clifton is now, named Jake Magee and Fleet Magee. They were kin to all of the other Magees who had settled up and down the river from Mississippi on down. Jake and Fleet were nephews to Hezekiah Magee, who owned Isom Wilson. ... 

Then there was John Magee, a brother to Hezekiah. He had a plantation on the Bayou Sara, and he finally sold out in Washington Parish and moved over there.
