Crowley first became involved with the Golden Dawn in 1898 and soon managed to earn the hatred of Yeats, Waite, and MacGregor Mathers. In 1900 he helped to add to the turmoil that caused the break up of the society. While in Egypt in 1904, he founded his own occult movement called Thelema. Crowley said that the Egyptian god Horus contacted him and appointed him as the god s chosen prophet and scribe. Through his minister, Aiwass, Horus dictated a text to Crowley. The result was Crowley s most famous book, The Book of the Law, in which he laid out the official doctrine of the new Aeon of Horus.
