Lupulon (P-lupulic acid, bitter acid) [468-28-0] M 414.6, m 92-94°, pK ,t(i) 4.2, pKj t z) Recrystallise Lupulon from 90% MeOH, hexane or petroleum ether at low temperature. In other experiments the beta acids are oxidized in alkaline aqueous solutions, either at slightly increased temperatures in the presence of an inorganic catalyst, or by irradiation with the aid of a photosensitizer, such as methylene blue (13). These oxidations occur very rapidly and should be controlled carefully. After transformation of the lupulates to the hulupates, the hulupones are liberated by acidification and extraction with hexane. The yield is about 16%.
