Reporters, luminescent

The concept is extendable to templated sensors made of protein templated xerogels in which a luminescent reporter group is further added in close proximity to the template site so as to effectively transduce the protein-molecularly imprinted polymer binding event (Figure 6.12).11... 

Three basic types of relay mechanisms are relevant to the chemosensors of Sec. IV a conformational change, energy transfer, and electron transfer. Operating alone or in concert, these relay mechanisms communicate the molecular recognition event of analyte binding at the receptor site to the luminescent reporter site. We now briefly discuss each of these relay mechanisms. 

In a recent study it was reported that luminescence reporters could be detected at lower concentrations and with a faster response time compared with fluorescent reporter proteins. In E. coli there is negligible luminescence background but a considerable autofluorescence background, so that larger amounts of protein are required to overcome background levels (Hakkila et al., 2002).

The strong quenching of the luminescence reported by Morita et al. [52] is consistent with photoinduced electron transfer. Figure 8.7 shows the intensity of the photoluminescence as a fimction of the C o concentration in P3HT/ Ceo composites.
