Luminescence thermometry has become the most common noncontact technique in recent years. As shown in Section 2.2, the crystal-field levels of the excited state rapidly thermahze after an excitation and, as a result, the luminescence spectrum varies as a function of temperature. The first detector to be used for SFA was a photometer, and photometric determinations still form the vast majority of current methods.
