Luminescence experiments Subject

The formation of boundary layers at the surface interface between semiconductor and gas influences also the luminescence and the electro-optical qualities of semiconductors. These effects offer interesting possibilities for studying experimentally the mechanism of chemisorption, the stationary state of chemisorption, and electron defects in the catalyst during catalysis. Experiments along this line have been carried out by some investigators (40,41) who have studied in a qualitative way the factors influencing the oxidation of phenols catalyzed by zinc oxide under the influence of light. Further work on this subject is desirable. 

As with other psychedelics, "out-of-body experiences occur in many peyote and mescaline trips. Users have often felt weightless and had a sense of "flying. More than a few have reported seeing their body become "luminescent or "transparent as they looked on from some distance away. One of Ellis subjects felt a blue flame wafting from the back of his head, then found himself becoming transparent like a Chinese lantern. 

Johnson, Eyring, and Williams (38), as well as the chapter by Johnson in this volume, for a discussion of this subject. Oxygen consumption is therefore directly connected with luminescence, and permeability might produce effects on luminescence as well as on oxygen consumption without the necessity of devoting attention to intermediate steps. On the basis of this work one is led to consider that permeability to oxygen may be significant in the experiments of Fisher and Stem.
