A typical scintillation cell is shown schematically in Fig. 9.23. It consists of a hemispherical or right circular cylinder (George, 1976 Lucas, 1957). The walls of the chamber are optically clear, and are coated with ZnS (Ag) scintillator powder. Air is introduced into the chamber passively (after evacuation of the chamber with a pump, and opening to atmosphere) or by means of a pump. Inside the chamber, the Rn decays into the RnD. The alpha particles from the decay causes the scintillation powder on the walls to scintillate. Four hours after sampling, the radon is in equilibrium with its daughters. The container is then placed on a photomultiplier tube and the scintillation pulses (light pulses) from the ZnS layer are counted with associated electronics. With calibration, the number of light pulses can be related to the concentration of Rn in the sampled air.

It was in this new environment that the James Bond films—a formulaic series already beginning to seem outdated— tried to compete. In addition, Stanley Kubrick had released the big-budget, futuristic film 2001 A Space Odyssey (1968), while a similar technologically-based film, THX1138, was produced by George Lucas in 1971. The development of storylines based on futuristic space technology would later be escalated by the release of the first Star Wars film in 1977.

Of course, George Lucas knew he could get away with it for that particular film. Usually you don t want to make an ending that open, because it ieaves a story feeling unfinished. Your player, who has worked so hard to reach the finale and who finds there s no "end there, will usually feel cheated and manipulated.
