Love Blossom

I MAKES ONE 8-INCH LAYER CAKE, ONE 10-INCH TUBE CAKE, OR 24 CUPCAKES I 

This is based on a cake my mom ofien made. It came from Maida Heatter s Book of Great Chocolate Desserts, except that Mom could never stick to the recipe. The sour cream tempers the cake s sweetness, and the cake itself is so moist that it almost resembles a pound cake in texture. I fill it with Vanilla Whipped Cream tinted in a bright color or Red Currant Curd, and cover it with Sweet Chocolate Ganache. It s the perfect cake for beginners—my husband found my recipe journal and baked this cake for my birthday  

6 ounces organic unsweetened chocolate 1 stick 0/2 cup) organic unsalted butter 

2 cups organic all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder V 2 teaspoon salt 

1 cup firmly packed organic light brown sugar

TO MAKE THE CAKE AS PICTURED ON PAGE 30, bake two batches of cake in 8- and 6-inch pans. It s best to use two of each size for two layers. Extra batter from the 6-inch cake can be used to fill a small tray filled with cupcake liners. Prepare the Love Blossom flowers a few days before (page 226) and the Vanilla Whipped Buttercream (page 84), tinted pale lemon yellow. Use at least three different colors for the flowers, in pink tones—or as I do for baby boy showers, shades of pale blue. Fill, frost, and chill the cakes, then follow the directions to tier the layers on page 242-... 

When I first started making sugar-paste flowers, I simply went to my local cake-supply shop and bought a few sizes of dogwood cutters, which are the flower shapes I use on my popular chocolate Love Blossom cakes (page 31).

A facial steam can help you put your best face forward. To deeply clean the pores of dry or irritated skin, boil a pot of water, remove from the heat and add a generous handful of elder blossoms. Stir and place on a padded countertop. Drape a towel over your head and gently lean close to the steaming tea to sweat out grime, imbedded oil and your make-up. Plant breeders have developed thousands of hybrids and cultivars from the more than 100 species in this genus. Divided into 15 divisions, based on bloom time, flower form, and parentage, tulips bear cup-shaped blossoms on 6"-24" tall flower stalks. Flowers come in all colors except true blue bicolors are common. Thick, 6"-8" long, straplike leaves surround flower stems. 

Crab apples (Malus sppj are ideal for small yards, especially John Downie (25 x 25 ft/8 x 8 m) or the weeping M X scheideckeri Re6 Jade (12 x 12 fV4 x4 m). Insects will gorge on the blossoms and birds love to devour the red... 

The strikingly different odors of cis-trorw-isomers and diastereomers is demonstrated by various other pairs of terpenes. For example, the synthetie fragranee (E)-S-methyl-a-ionone has a lovely flowery smell like the blossoms of violets, whereas the (Z)-isomer emits a woody tobaceo-like odor. Likewise, the strongly woody smelling sesquiterpene (-)- /-y-eudesmol from Algerian oil of geranium eontrasts wifli the almost odorless diastereomer (-l-)-y-eudesmol whieh is wide-spread among ethereal oils. 

I thank my husband, my son and my loving Cicero for being with me whenever I needed them. I thank them for being patient with me for accepting me as I am. I know it has been difficult for them. As Marcel Proust said, they really are my charming gardeners who make my soul blossom. ... 

This brief summary provides an indication of how the basic ideas introduced by Lewis and Kossel have blossomed over the last century as a result of the nourishment provided by quantum theory and the love and attention bestowed on them by successive generations of chemists. We hope that the quality and depth of the many contributions in these three volumes will convince the reader that the sentiment expressed in the title of this series The Chemical Bond 100 Years Old and Getting Stronger is appropriate.
