Laycock was succeeded in 1916 as Demonstrator in Chemistry by May Williams.73 Williams, born on 7 May 1886, was the daughter of Ralph Williams, minister of Maida Vale, London. She was educated at Notting Hill High School (a GPDSC school), and then obtained a B.Sc. in Chemistry at RHC. Williams was first appointed to the rank of Demonstrator, and then was promoted to Senior Demonstrator in 1920 and to Assistant Lecturer in 1921, the year she received her M.Sc. degree. Although Roebuck established the first sulfuric acid plant in Scotland, nothing of substance has been written about his career as a chemist. Laing was a provincial minister who also held an MD. He used his chemical knowledge to publish on spas, one example being An Account of Peterhead, its Mineral Well, Air and Neighbourhood (London, 1793). [Pg.151]

In 1858, the Medical Act created the General Medical Council, one of whose duties was to compile an official pharmacopoeia for the whole of the United Kingdom to supersede the three current ones for London, Edinburgh and Dublin. The first British Pharmacopoeia was published in 1864 (the 1958 and 1993 editions were published by the Health Ministers on the recommendations of the Medicines Commission vide infra). [Pg.423]

His name was Archibald Cockren. He had qualified as an osteopath in London in 1904. During World War I he had been in charge of the department of electrical massage and remedial treatment, first at the Russian Hospital in London, and then at the Prisoners of War Hospital. Later he had been attached to the Australian Army, and served on the staff of the Australian prime minister at the peace conference. He was clearly a respected and responsible practitioner. [Pg.134]
