Local supercluster

Local group The collection of galaxies, including the Milky Way and Andromeda, that form part of the Virgo cluster as part of the local supercluster of galaxies. [Pg.312]

Local Supercluster The flattened galaxy cluster of which the Local Group is a member. It is about 100 million light-years across, with the Virgo cluster at its centre. [Pg.485]

Fig. 1 furthermore indicates a clustering of the clusters themselves and the resulting superclusters appear to be glued together by locally elevated levels of cholesterol. Even more striking is the qualitative observation that the distribution of the cholesterol molecules in the plane of the membrane is not random. Indeed, cholesterol molecules tend to accumulate in the lipid-domain interfaces. This is quantified in Fig. 4b which shows the ratio of the cholesterol concentration at the interfaces to that of the bulk. This figure shows that there is more than twice the amount of cholesterol at the lipid-domain interfaces than in the bulk. Cholesterol is clearly not randomly distributed in the membrane plane, but tend to accumulate in lipid-domain interfaces. [Pg.287]
