Finally, one can only advise those who are called upon to generate, review and approve promotional materials to stand back sometimes and think objectively about how the recipient of promotion will think about what is said or written. Certainly one s best chance of avoiding being found in breach of the code lies in doing this and also in using Joan Barnard s excellent little book The Code in Practice, recently reprinted. ... 

A meeting has been scheduled between the head of product development and the research staff to discuss the results of the various studies under way on the new additive. Tom and Joan present their findings, which basically show that there is little conclusive evidence of increased cancer or any other kind of risk resulting directly from the new additive, pending further study.

The past years have seen the loss of two staunch champions for the both of us — the late Athel LJ. Beckwith FAA, FRS from the Research School of Chemistry, ANU (scientist extraordinaire, mentor and friend) as well as Mrs Joan E. Smith, Research School of Chemistry AMJ (a dedicated and amazing librarian, and a strong supporter of this book and its previous editions. In her eyes, we could do no wrong). The world is a little less bright in their absence. We dedicate this book to their memories.

Whitrow may also have been related to the Restoration mystic Joan Whitrowe (fl. 1665-1697), who prophesied against social and economic injustice see my forthcoming entry in ODNB. 

He insisted we go to his house to stay. We did so, gladly. His wife is a Creole, beautiful. He has a little yellow-haired girl of about two, Joan, who is just learning to talk. She has very fine toys, and is a very intelligent child.
