Like Fire in the Hands of Children

Only scientijic progress can restore all that the war destroyed. 

The great technical accomplishments that the past 50 years have granted us, when controlled by primitive egoists, are like fire in the hands cfi small children. 

Fritz haber turned fifty on December 9, 1918, a month after the war ended. There were no great celebrations. He was surrounded by too many worries, and too much exhaustion. 

Haber and his nation rose and fell together as though connected 

For Fritz Haber, too, it was a time of clashing extremes, of honor and dishonor. One day he feared being placed on trial as a war criminal the next he received science s most prestigious prize. He secretly advised a network of military officers and industrialists who hoped to rebuild Germany s military arsenal, yet maintained friendships with socialists and pacifists.
