To achieve the required performance of today s devices and transmission media, it is necessary to modify and manipulate materials at the atomic level with an unprecedented degree of control and purity [2]. To illustrate this point, materials and material processing used to manufacture electronic devices and light wave media (optical fibers) will be discussed in some detail.
