Interaction ligand field

One observes, a strong broad absorption spectrum in the UV part of the spectrum as the excited 5d state of the Eu ion is split by ligand field interaction with the oxygen ions surrounding it. 

The source of this discrepancy has not yet been identified. We note, if ligand-field interactions are not included in the determination of free-ion wave functions, then J-mixing between the manifolds will not occur. This J-mixing will be very important in the calculation of transition probabilities in the actinide systems.

The spectra of a number of complex U(v) halide compounds appear in the literature and, based on representative crystallographic determinations, the site symmetry is usually shown to be approximately octahedral. The combined effect of the spin-orbit and octahedral ligand field interactions is to split the parent state into five components whose irreducible double group labels are indicated in Fig. 16.17.
