Library of Congress system

I have followed the U.S. Library of Congress system of transliteration in this book, except in cases where alternate spellings have become more familiar to North American readers (for instance, Anya instead of Ania and banya instead of bania). The word dacha is pronounced with a soft Ichl sound, as in church, and the stress is on the first syllable. The words dachnik and dachniki are similarly pronounced with the stress on the first syllable. [Pg.213]

There are two main systems used by libraries to classify books the Dewey Decimal system and the Library of Congress system. Libraries differ in the way they employ these systems, especially by adding further numbers and letters after the standard classification marks to signify, say, shelving position or edition number. Enquire at your library for a full explanation of local usage. [Pg.317]

Unfortunately there is, even in English, no generally accepted form of transliteration. In the United States we have the Chemical Abstracts system, the Library of Congress system, the Government Printing Office system, the New York Public Library system, and perhaps others as well. The system used by British Abstracts is similar to, but not absolutely identical to, the one used by Chemical Abstracts. [Pg.77]

Library materials cataloged under the Library of Congress systems can be found under several call number sections. Most materials are in the T, TA, TJ, and TS sections. Other sections with additional sources are RC and HE. The following is a list of some major call numbers ... [Pg.346]

In the Library of Congress collections one can find good and bad examples of the two systems, silking and cellulose acetate lamination. One can only conclude, therefore, that in addition to adequate treatment of the papers before lamination, the craftsman s manipulative techniques of application, (and, with silking, pressing and drying) are fundamental to truly archival protection. [Pg.23]

Library of Congress and others started having problems with paper fragility in many of their so-called permanent reference books. Subsequent investigations determined the reduced permanence resulted from a combination of two factors, the use of wood as a source of cellulose fiber coupled with acid papermaking and sizing systems. [Pg.241]

If the superconducting film developed at Cornell is ever put into a telecommunications system, those stats would pale in comparison. Fast as they are, fiber-optical pulses must work in three steps conversion of electricity to light and back to electricity, a process that is relatively slow. A superconductor transmitting electrical pulses alone could, theoretically, carry more than a trillion bits of information per second—enough to handle 15 million simultaneous phone conversations, or to transmit everything in print in the Library of Congress in a couple of minutes ... [Pg.113]
