Levamisole observational studies

Literature data on the depletion of levamisole residues from edible animal products concern only the parent drug (33). It appears, however, that the metabolism of levamisole in food-producing animals is qualitatively similar to that in rats, since limited data from swine (34) and goats (35) are generally consistent with those observed for rats. Metabolism studies in rats using radiolabeled levamisole showed extensive metabolism of levamisole, with at least 50 metabolites identified in some samples of urine from treated rats. 

With the anthelmintic tetramisole (124) some mood elevating activity in depressed schizophrenics was observed during a double-blind crossover study [306,307]. The (+)-enantiomer of (124), dexamisole, showed effects in depression in small preliminary clinical trials [308].The(—)-antipode,levamisole,was the active anthelmintic in the racemate [309-311], but of its central activity nothing is mentioned. Based upon these observations, the object of this study was to determine the effects of tetramisole, which is a mixture of levamisole and dextramisole, on the diabetogenesis of EMC-D virus in ICR Swiss male mice. Also, the effects upon the induction of EMC-D virus-mediated diabetes of platinum polymers of tetramisole was evaluated.
