In order to pursue this question I focus on a much cited article in the literature, namely, Larry Laudan s A Confutation of Convergent Realism (Laudan 1981). I will take up some of his points in order to see whether the case of atomic orbitals casts any new light on the issue or whether it might even serve as a different kind of example. I do this because I believe that a stronger case can be made for divorcing the question of whether theoretical terms refer from the question of the success or otherwise of the theories in which such terms are featured. [Pg.208]
