Lariats (Fig. 13.31) are used on working ranches but are now more often seen at rodeos to rope animals in competitions. Lariat ropes have a wax coating to make the line smooth and stiff in bending. [Pg.422]

The name lariat ethers has recently been suggested by Gokel and coworkers to describe a class of compounds which are based on crown ethers and have secondary donor groups bound to the macrormg by flexible arms (see Sect. 1.3 5). The name lariat is suggested by the analogy to the lassoes used to rope and tie animals since it is hoped that the more successful molecules of this class will be able to do likewise with sundry cationic species. [Pg.39]

The name lariat was suggested by similarities with the use of a lasso in Old West America to rope and tie an animal.237- 46 A good example is the ligand (143), with two pyridyl-containing arms. [Pg.233]

When the tether is attached to the macroring at carbon, the molecule is said to have a carbon pivot atom. When the side arm is attached as illustrated at the right, the pivot atom is nitrogen. Because the molecular models of these compounds resemble lassos and because the combination of side arm and macroring donors can permit a cation to be roped and tied , we have called such macrocycles lariat ethers . [Pg.431]

The physical resemblance of CPK molecular models of these compounds to rope lassoes coupled with the concept of roping and tying" a cation suggested the name lariat ether. [Pg.716]
