Also high purity lanthanum may be produced by electrolysis of a molten mixture of anhydrous lanthanum chloride and sodium chloride or potassium chloride at elevated temperatures. [Pg.446]

Lanthanum chloride is used to prepare other lanthanum salts. The anhydrous chloride is employed to produce lanthanum metal. [Pg.447]

Pulverized lanthanum chloride heptahydrate was purchased from Aldrich Chemical Company, Inc. (purity 99.9%), or Kanto Chemical Company, Inc. (purity 99.99%). The anhydrous salt is very hygroscopic and must be protected against moisture. It can, however, be handled very quickly in air without any special precaution. [Pg.9]

The metallothermic reduction of the oxides by La produces the metals Sm, Eu, Tm, Yb, all having high vapour pressures. The reaction goes to completion due to the removal of the rare earths by volatilization from the reaction chamber (lanthanum has a low vapour pressure). The remaining rare earth metals (Sc, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Y, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Lu) can be obtained by quantitative conversion of the oxides in fluorides, followed by reduction with Ca. The metallothermic reduction of the anhydrous rare earth chlorides could be also used to obtain La, Ce, Pr and Nd. The molten electrolysis can be applied to obtain only the first four lanthanide metals, La, Ce, Pr and Nd, because of the high reactivity of the materials that limits the operating temperatures to 1100°C or lower. [Pg.362]

Praseodymium, separation of mixtures with lanthanum from monazite, as magnesium nitrate double salt, 2 56, 67 Praseodymium (III) nitrate, analysis of anhydrous, 5 41 Praseodymium (III) oxide, for synthesis of nitrate, 5 39w. To be used as modified catalysts or ion exchangers, the incorporation of d or f block elements into zeohte structures has been extensively investigated (the ion exchange of cations in crystaUine aluminosihcates and related materials is a standard method used for modifying their catalytic and sorption properties. For example, the solid-state interaction of lanthanum(III) chloride with zeolites under anhydrous conditions was investigated [2]. [Pg.110]
