Langrangian

It is the gradient-squared term that caught Frieden s attention. Frieden noticed that it almost always appears in the Langrangians for various physical phenomena. The Langrangian for classical mechanics, for example, is dq/dt) — V. The La-grangian for the Schroedinger equation contains the term Vtp. The reader can perhaps recall at least a half-dozen other simple examples from basic physics (see Table 1.1 in [frieden98]).

The challenge is, to develop a model for the packed bed which is not only resolving heat and mass transfer within the bed, but also transport processes over each particle. Thus, a particle model is combined with the description of the flow through the porous bed. A Langrangian formulation for the solid phase in the bed is chosen here, where each particle is monitored during its conversion process. 

Due to the Langrangian formulation applied to the solid phase, the use of an effective thermal conductivity as usually applied to porous media is not necessary. In a packed bed heat is transported between solid particles by radiation and conduction. For materials with low thermal conductivity, such as wood, conduction contributes only to a minor extent to the overall heat transport. Furthermore, heat transfer due to convection between the primary air flow through the porous bed and the solid has to be taken into account. Heal transfer due to radiation and conduction between the particles is modelled by the exchange of heat between a particle and its neighbours. The definition of the neighbours depends on the assembly of the particles on the flow field mesh.
