An unnamed 1,2-linked diglucoside (27) has been described from Perilla frutescens var. acuta (Lamiaceae). 

Incorporation of [3,5- C2]mevalonate into ursolic acid by cell cultures of Perilla frutescens var. acuta (Lamiaceae) has been examined. In another series of experiments with [2- C,4,4- H2]mevalonate, the postulated 1,2 migration of the hydride ion fi om C-19 to C-20 (ursane numbering) was confirmed (Harrison, 1988).

Citrus reticulata, and other plants. The ( )-oxime of (5)-(-)-P. is used in Japan as a sweetener Perilla sugar and has a 2000-fold higher sweetness than saccharose. 

The essential oil from the leaves of the African plant Pkc-tranthus scutellarioides (syn. Perilla nankinensis or P. frutescens, Lamiaceae) contains as a main component (50-60%) monocyclic (-)-perrillyl aldehyde (perUlal, 8-40), whose biosynthesis starts with (-)-limonene and proceeds via (-)-perillyl alcohol as the intermediate. Animal studies suggest that perillyl alcohol may help slow the growth of pancreatic, mammary and liver tumours.
